Frequently Asked Questions

What are organic fruits and vegetables?

Organic foods are free of pesticides and synthetic fertilizers. Organic foods contain more nutrients like vitamins A, C and E, as well as omega-3 fatty oils. These nutritious ingredients make organic foods better for our bodies, and for the planet.

Organic foods are made using sustainable agricultural practices, which protect soil quality and promote biodiversity. They are produced without harmful chemicals, irradiation, or sewage sludge.

Most people associate organics with fruits, but organic products also include dairy, meat and poultry, as well as baked goods, personal care items, pet food and household cleaning supplies.

The USDA defines "organic" as that crops being raised according to strict rules set forth by federal government standards. Farmers cannot use conventional (non-organic) methods to grow these foods. However, they can use approved organic pest control methods like crop rotation and covering cropping or animal feed made with organic materials.

The farmer must also follow the guidelines for how much fertilizer and insecticide he uses throughout the growing season. He must also rotate his fields among different crops. GMOs, artificial growth hormones, synthetic pesticides and synthetic fertilizers are not allowed in the fields of farmers.

Fruits and vegetables labelled "100% organic" meet all the requirements above. But not all farms will label their products 100% organic. That would confuse consumers. Instead, they will call their product "made using organic ingredients." "

Why should I go organic?

The health risks of conventional agriculture include asthma, allergies and diabetes. When buying food, you must make wise choices.

The Environmental Working Group (EWG), offers these tips to help you choose "cleaner" foods:

Always purchase organic fruits, vegetables and other products whenever possible.

Look for USDA organic labels on meat, poultry, eggs, milk, cheese, yogurt, butter, and honey.

Avoid processed foods labeled as "natural" or "no additives."

Carefully review ingredient lists. It is possible to add an ingredient during processing if it isn't already listed.

Choose fresh meats over frozen or canned ones. Many frozen and canned foods contain less nutrients, like high fructose Corn Syrup.

Why is organic foods important?

For our health, organic produce is crucial. It's the best method to ensure you eat healthy foods. Not only is it better for us, but it's also more environmentally friendly because it doesn't rely on pesticides and fertilizers.

Organic farming relies on natural methods to cultivate crops, without the use of harmful chemicals. This makes organic farming safer for both humans and animals. Organic food is a way to help the environment and protect yourself.

However, organic food is good for our health. We all know the negative effects that processed foods can have on our health. But did you know that most organic fruits and vegetables aren't treated with chemical spray either? They taste fresher, look better and last longer.

This is why organic food is so important. It's healthy for you and the planet.

What should I look out for when buying organic products?

Look for USDA-certified organic labels. This certifies that the product has met certain standards set by USDA. Look for the "USDA Organic" seal on packages, boxes, cartons, cans, and jars.

When you shop for meat, ensure that it comes from cows who are fed organic feed. Cattle are ruminants which means that they chew the cud. Ruminant cattle are divided into four stomach compartments, the rumen and reticulum as well as the omasum and abmasum. If a cow is to be labeled organically, all parts must be organically fed.

Buy chicken from only organic chickens that have been fed 100% organic food and are not given antibiotics. Chickens can eat both animal and plant food. Omnivorous chickens have a digestive system that includes a crop (proventriculus), gizzard and small intestine.

When buying dairy products, ensure they come from cows fed 100% organically grown feed. Dairy cows have four stomach compartments, just like ruminants. The fourth stomach compartment is the udder.

You should always check the label before purchasing any other livestock. This will let you know what percentage of the diet was given to the animals. A label for pork might say "95% organic", which means that 95% of the feed used by the pork came from organic sources.

Statistics

  • To provide the highest quality products and services to every customer, with a dedicated workforce that puts the customer first and takes the extra step to achieve 100% customer satisfaction and loyalty. (hollinsorganic.com)
  • Cosmetic brands such as Laurel and Rose Mira are 100 percent organic and have a wide array of skincare products. (en.wikipedia.org)
  • As for organic meat, regulations require that animals be raised in living conditions that accommodate their natural behaviours (like the ability to graze on pasture), fed 100% organic feed and forage, and not administered antibiotics or hormones. (usda.gov)

How To

What happens to your body when you switch to organic products?

Organic products are grown without pesticides, synthetic fertilizers, hormones, antibiotics, or genetic manipulation. They are derived from clean water and animals that have been free to roam. The term "organic", which means they don't contain additives or chemicals, refers to their non-containing any. This product was made from natural materials and is free of harmful substances.

Natural means how food is grown. It is used to describe food that has not been processed into its final form, such as fruits. Natural foods are often fresher because they're not subject to heat radiation, chemical preservatives or any other treatment. Natural doesn't necessarily have to be healthy, however. Experts agree that organic and conventional foods are very similar. Both types have been tested for quality and safety. Organic produce is less likely to contain pesticide residues and pollutants than conventionally grown produce.

Most grocery stores now carry organic meats and poultry. You can find organic meat, poultry, eggs, and seafood at your local market. Some companies sell only organic products; others have separate sections for them. You should look for USDA Certified Organic, Non GMO Project Verified (Biodynamic Association Certified), Rainforest Alliance Certified, and other certifications.

These foods should be avoided by women who are pregnant or breast-feeding. Unborn babies and infants can be affected by pesticides.
